Onondaga Lake- Reviving a Lost Paradise
Have you ever heard of Onondaga Lake? This large body of water straddles the city of Syracuse, New York. It was once a beautliful fresh water paradise, where people used to catch a large variety of great eating fish, like Trout, White Fish, Bass, Walleye, and it's situated right in the middle of the city. Well, of course the industrial boom, and subsequent dumping of toxic chemicals, turned the lake into what was described in the 70's and 80's, as the "most polluted lake in America". It's been a huge issue for the entire region, and the EPA. Well now after about 20 years of healing, and massive cleanup efforts, the lake has been coming back. Certain revered species of fish have been returning, and it's now considered a "best kept secret" for some of the best Fishing around. This past year, my project partner Albert Daher and I received a grant from the EPA to produce a PBS style documentary that highlights the fishing lifestyle of angling on Onondaga Lake.
